Vella Virginia Asbury

Vella Virginia Asbury, 90, of South Charleston, went home to be the Lord on Sunday, August 26, 2007, at the ElderCare of West Virginia, Ripley after a long illness.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Briar Creek Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her son, Carol Asbury and husband, Colonia Asbury.

She is survived by her son, Jerry (Judy) Asbury of South Charleston; daughter-in-law, Jewell Asbury of South Charleston; two sisters, Lillian Smith of Charleston and Nina McKenzie of Princeton; three granddaughters, Monica Sigmon, Janet Blankenship and Sherri Asbury-Casto; eight great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Thomas P. Nolan and Kellis Parsons officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First United Methodist Church of South Charleston, 905 Glendale Avenue, South Charleston, West Virginia 25303.

Mary Elizabeth Gillenwater

Mary Elizabeth Gillenwater, 84, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 24, 2007 at home after a short illness.  She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Tammy Kerns; parents, John and Amber Mobley; brothers, John Mobley and Ray Neal; four sisters, Virginia Runyan, Lorraine Neal, Madaline Roberts and Della Mitchell.  She attended Summitt Ridge Community Church and had been a Christian for 64 years.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Otis D.; five children, Janet and (Allen) Hill of Sumerco, Jane and (David) Kerns of St. Albans, Obie and (Betsy) Gillenwater of Sumerco, Dorothy Roberts of Julian, Mark and (Vanessa) Gillenwater of Lewisburg; one sister, Helen Teel of Sandusky, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Virginia Mobley of St. Albans; 15 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Tom Price officiating. Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Sunday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Joan Carole (Harrison) (Griffith) Yallourakis, 61, of Dunbar passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness.

She was employed in the area of Home Health Care.  She was preceded in death by her father, Noah Addison Harrison, and sister, Shirley Kay Francisco.

She is survived by: Mother: Phyllis M. Harrison; Son: Kevin D. Griffith (Connie); Daughter: Amy Lutz (Paul); 3 Grandchildren: Cameron Scott Griffith, Paige Elizabeth Griffith, Raleigh Addison Lutz and Sister: Lucy Marie Howerton (Roy) and 3 Brothers: Larry Harrison (Patsy),John Harrison (Sandra),David Harrison (Sharon), and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Memorial service will be 6:00 PM Friday, August 24, 2007 at Bethany Baptist Church, 2504 Grant Street, St. Albans, WV, with Pastors Tim Campbell & Robert “Butch” Leadman officiating.  In lieu of flowers, family request donations to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.  Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek in charge of arrangements.

William “Bill” Clark, Jr., 81 formerly of the Alkol area and Hamlin, passed away August 9, 2007 in Akron, Ohio following a brief illness.  Born in Lincoln Co., he moved to the Akron area in 1958.A U. S. Army veteran of WWII, he had received his Masters Degree from Marshall College and was retired from the Akron Public School System, teaching for almost thirty years. After retirement, he worked for Cuyahoga Valley National Park Service for over twenty years. A former member of the Lions Club, he was a member of Portage Lakes Lodge F&AM, Tadmor Temple Shrine and Grace Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mattie (Linville) Clark; brothers, Mirrell, Merlin and Robert; sister, Helena Saul; and nephew Billy Gene Clark.  He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Eloise (Oxley) Clark, Daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn “Kitty” (Holley) and Ed Ortopan of Ohio, Marjorie (Holley) and Steven Marcum of Florida; Granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer (Lebold) and Mark Stevens; Granddaughter, Martha Marcum; Great-granddaughters, Claudia and Audrey Stevens; several nieces and nephews in the area.

Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 14, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Jackie Clark and Mike Kordusky officiating. Burial will be at the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Alberta Stowers

Alberta Stowers, 91, of Griffithsville died Friday, August 17, 2007, in CAMC General Hospital Charleston after complications from a massive stroke.  She had been a resident of Griffithsville for over 80 years and was retired form the U.S. Postal Service where she had worked in the Hamlin, Griffithsville & Yawkey Post Offices. She had also attended the Church of Christ for most of her adult life.

She is survived by her: Sisters: Vena Gartin of Waycross, GA; Helen Hick of Florida; Willetta Spresser of Griffithsville; and Serveral Nieces and Nephews.

Services will be 2PM Monday at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Minister Brian Barrett officiating. Burial will be at the Powell Cemetery, Hamlin. Friends may call 2 hours prior to service at the funeral home.

Marshall Adams

Marshall Adams, 84 of Sod, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at home after a long illness.  He was a retired construction worker from Union Carbide, a member of the Tango Baptist Church, a navy veteran of WW ll and a member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge.  He was preceded in death by his wife Frances (Marguerite) Adams, Great Grandson Nikolas Wikle, Parents John Calvin and Mattie Adams, sister Edna Manoka Lynn and brother J.C. Adams Jr.

He is survived by his:  2 Sons: Vernon and wife Kathy Adams of Sod; Michael and wife Linda Adams of Hurricane; Sister: Anna Lou Wade of Tango; 2 Brothers: Robert Adams of Goose Creek, South Carolina; Chester Adams of Julian;  Granddaughters: Wendi Adams of Hurricane; Summer Wikle and Husband, Cliff of St. Albans; Kerri Mooney and husband, Kyle of Clarksville, Indiana; Marchelle and Kimberly Adams of Sod.  Great grandchildren: Jacob and Elizabeth Mooney, Zane and Carly Wikle.

Service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 18, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek, with Pastor Chester Bird officiating. Burial with military rites by the Bennie Padilla VFW Post 4768 will be at the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Mabel Dunlap Edwards

Mabel Dunlap Edwards, 86, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 12, 2007.  Mabel was a Christian and one of the oldest members of McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church, Sod and was the owner – operator of the former Edwards Grocery at Alum Creek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Edwards.  She is survived by her two sons, Larry and Sharon Edwards of Alum Creek, Jerry and Anita Edwards of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; two daughters, Glenna and Bill Chapman of Alum Creek and Pamela and John McCormick of Cedar Key, Florida; one brother, Edgel Dunlap of Alum Creek; seven grandchildren, Elisa Edwards, Heidi Belleau, Cindy Orr, Jarrod Chapman, Shani Brinkman, Brandon McCormick and Gerri Lynn Edwards; 11 great grandchildren, Caitlin Orr, Matthew Belleau, Nathaneal Brinkman, Hannah Brinkman, Levi Brinkman, Raechel Brinkman, Jarron Chapman, Camille Chapman, Cheyenne McCormick, Courtney McCormick and Cameron McCormick; special friend, Brenda Flowers.

Services will be at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Roe Smith and Assistant Pastor John Gorrell officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church on Wednesday.  The family especially thanks Linda Allen of Alum Creek for the excellent, loving care she gave to Mabel. Patricia (Porty) Roberts 66 of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, August 11, 2007 after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Roberts and was a member of the Olcott Church of God.

She is survived by 4 Daughters: Cheryl Snodgrass of So Charelston, Patricia Gottberg of Chilloicothe, OH, Mary Hudson and Evelyn Waldron both of Alum Creek,.
