Emma Zetta Hughes, 90 of Sod went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb 28, 2003 at Thomas Memorial Hosp. in So Charleston.

She had been a member of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church since 1934 where she served as the pianist until 1996.

She is survived by her 4 daughters: Lonetta Crammer of Kentucky, Edna Smith &Mary Beckett both of Sod Brenda Ferguson of Dunbar 1 Sister: Bessie Clark of Charleston; 1 Brother: Luther Hudson of California 1 god son: Paul Bowman of Alum Creek 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren.

Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 3, 2003 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel in Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Johnny Vickers officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday at the Funeral Home.

Skyler Elisha Smith, son of John and Jessica Smith of Alum Creek, was stillborn February 26, 2003 at CAMC Women’s and Children’s Hospital Charleston.

Graveside service will be 1 PM Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Fox Hill Cemetery, So. Charleston with Pastor John Chandler officiating. There will be no visitation. Curry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James W. “Jim” Antill

James W. “Jim” Antill, 81, of Alkol, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 24, 2003 at CAMC General Division emergency room.

He was a retired welder for Keyser Aluminum for 26 years, a member of Sycamore Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and deacon. He was a WWII Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and daughter, Patricia Antill Arritt. He is survived by his: 2 Sons: Timmy Antill of Yawkey; David Antill of Millwood; 1 Daughter: Loretta Whitten of Alkol; 2 Brothers: Tom Antill of Alkol; Henry Antill of Cameo; 8 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Sycamore Grove Baptist Church, Alkol, on Friday, February 28, 2003 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Darrell Searls and Rev. Bill Pistore officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Thursday, February 27, 2003 from 6 to 8 PM at the Cunt’ Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

Hattie E. Huffman

Hattie E. Huffman, 83, of St. Albans, died Sunday, February 23, 2003 at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis “Buster” Huffman.

Hattie was a member of the First Baptist Church, St. Albans and the Meadors Sunday school class.

She is survived by her: 2 Daughters: Bernice Hale of Murfreesboro, TN Patricia Huffman of Pride, LA; 1 Son: Donald Huffman of Black Betsy, WV; 2 Sisters: Dessie Graley of South Charleston, WV Lucy Ricks of Indianapolis, IN; 2 Brothers: Lewis Brown of McCorkle, W V Martin Brown of St. Albans, WV;  6 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren .

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, February 27, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Joel Harpold officiating. Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Peggy J. Wheeler Steele

Peggy J. Wheeler Steele, 62, of South Charleston, went to be with the Lord Friday, February 21, 2003 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston after a short illness.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, McCorkle and was formerly employed by K- Mart.

She is survived by her Husband: Donald; 3 Daughters: Joyce Smith of Alum Creek, WV; Kay Stanley of Burnsville, WV; Donna Kulkarni of St. Albans, WV; 1 Sister: Hilda Williams of South Charleston, WV; 1 Brother: Edward Wheeler of McCorkle, WV; 7 Grandsons and 1 Granddaughter.

Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, February 24, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery McCorkle. Friends may call from 4 to 6 PM today at the funeral home.

Howard Carter Barker

Howard Carter Barker, 100, of St. Albans, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 16, 2003.

He was born November 8, 1902, the son of William and Brook Barker of Curry, Logan County.

He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, St. Albans. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather who touched the lives of many people and loved God and his family more than anything. He is known locally for the huge garden that he tended each year until he was 96 years old.

He sang in the choir at Hansford Senior Center for many years. In younger days, he sang in gospel quartets, worked in the mines, worked for the railroad, was a salesman for Lantz Lumber Company, and was a house designer and builder.

He celebrated his 100th birthday at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had been recuperating from a broken hip.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Opal F. Barker, his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Robert J. an Peg Barker of Kinston, NC; his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and J.V. Byrnside of St. Albans; daughter, Betty J. Hornoff of Warwick, RI; daughter and son-in-law, Marcella “Peggy” and Ross Spurlock of St. Albans; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia “Patti” and J. Allen Ruebush of Hurricane; sister, Sadie Smith of Chapmanville; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Baptist Church, St. Albans, with the Rev. Allen Stewart and Rev. Bob Barker officiating. Burial will be held in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Howard to Trinity Baptist Church, 2031 Harrison Avenue, St. Albans, West Virginia 25177.

Robert G. “Hoppy” Williams

Robert G. “Hoppy” Williams of Charleston, formerly of Alum Creek died Wednesday, February 12, 2003.

He had attended the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Concrete Designs Inc., James Kidd owner, and also worked for Larry Hensley Roofing Company.

He is survived by: 2 Sisters: Betty Stephenson of Charleston, WV Dora Parsons of Tornado, WV; 2 Brothers: Harvey Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC Lawrence Williams of Emmons, WV Carl Williams of Charleston, WV; Several nieces and nephews, one great niece and many friends.

Larry Keith Ramsey

Larry Keith Ramsey, 57, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at home after a short illness.

He was a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents P. J. “Jack” and Grace Ramsey. He helped many in the community any way he could especially the senior citizens, he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by 2 Aunts: Dorothy Merryman of Hopewell, VA Betty Toney of Bridgeville, PA.

Service will be Sunday, February 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Robert “Butch” Leadman officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. Friends may call 1 hour prior to service at the funeral home.
